The Anti-Planner by Dani Donovan: and why I love it!

It’s a universal ADHD thing to consistently struggle with tasks because we’re feeling unmotivated, uninspired, overwhelmed, stuck, etc and all neurotypical people have to say is “Why don’t you get a planner?” “Have you tried making a schedule?” “Just do it in baby steps! One chunk at a time!” and you feel like screaming in their faces “I’ve tried that!” “It’s not that easy!” “I don’t even know where to begin!” Ugh!

Yeah. Been there. It sucks because how do you explain to someone that you can hyperfocus on making the most amazing, most perfect, easy to follow, productivity inducing schedule/to-do list/life plan in the whole entire world, made with gel pens and stickers and glitter and every post-it you could possibly find and it only took you 8 consecutive hours with no food or bathroom breaks but following that schedule is just not going to happen. Because ADHD monkey brain will just go “Why do thing when can play game instead?”

Well, I was recommended The Anti-Planner: How To Get Sh*t Done When You Don’t Feel Like It by Dani Donovan by a commenter on a Reddit post of mine when I asked for useful things to help my AuDHD. I waited for it to be in stock and immediately bought it. This planner was made for people with ADHD by someone with ADHD and it shows!

It has all sorts of games/activities to help bribe the ADHD goblin into getting stuff done and each section is about different feelings i.e. feeling unmotivated, uninspired, overwhelmed, stuck, etc. You don’t even have to read the whole thing! You just flip to the section that describes how you’re feeling and look for a solution that suits you! Each section header also has recommendations! Best part about this planner though, is that it’s interactive! Dani Donovan recommends using erasable pens so you can use the pages again and again.

As I said earlier, this was made for ADHDers by an ADHDer and Dani Donovan explains that it’s okay to misplace this book, it’s okay to forget about it. Because you’ll eventually come back to it and it will be just as useful as the day you bought it. I highly recommend this book. It has been my saving grace when I’ve had chores to do and nearly caved into the seductive calls of my Nintendo Switch.

One of my favourite activities is Procrastination Blackjack, all you need is a deck of cards (and to know how to play blackjack). It has motivated me to do so many simple tasks that I was putting off because they’re boring.

I honestly hope you love this book as much as I do!
